Embattled (allegedly) CROOKED Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell to resign Tuesday night

Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell WILL resign Tuesday night at a city council meeting, his lawyer said.

Elwell is one of the many public officials implicated in last week’s federal sting on New Jersey politicians and members of the Jewish community there and in Brooklyn.

Elwell is accused of taking a $10,000 payoff from FBI informant Solomon Dwek, who brought down 44 people in the 3-year probe.

Elwell is the first of the three New Jersey mayors involved in the scandal to quit.

Ridgefield Mayor Anthony Suarez said at a contentious council meeting Monday night he is confident he will be exonerated. He’s charged with taking a $10,000 bribe.

Ridgefield’s borough council passed a resolution calling on Suarez to resign, but the vote was nonbinding.

Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano III has denied charges he took bribes and has rejected calls to step down.

Awesome! Does this mean he’s free to give the Keynote Address at this years’ EXXXOTICA!?!

Secaucus Mayor Could Resign Today

The office of Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell was slapped with a subpoena on Monday, July 27 as part of the ongoing political corruption scandal that led to the arrests of 44 public officials last week, including Elwell.

Town Administrator David Drumeler confirmed that investigators have seized the mayor’s appointment calendar, message pads, and other records.

Elwell was among the 44 government officials who were targeted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark as part of the massive bribery and money laundering scandal that has rocked New

Jersey. He was charged with “conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right.”

According to federal prosecutors, Elwell allegedly took a $10,000 cash bribe from a witness who was cooperating with investigators. In exchange for the payment, the mayor allegedly agreed to help the witness get a hotel built in Secaucus, prosecutors said.

Elwell was released on a $100,000 personal recognizance bond, according to his lawyer.

Tom Cammarata, one of two attorneys representing Elwell, said on Monday that a press conference will likely be held on July 28 to release a statement on the case. Observers are speculating that Elwell may announce his resignation from office at that time.

NEWARK — Federal authorities arrested 44 people in New Jersey and New York today in a broad-ranging corruption and international money laundering investigation that led to charges against two N.J. assemblyman and the mayors of Hoboken, Secaucus and Ridgefield.

Politicians accused of taking bribes include Assemblyman L. Harvey Smith (D-Hudson), Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt (R-Ocean), Ridgefield Mayor Anthony Suarez, Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell. The FBI and IRS investigation also ensnared rabbis from the Syrian Jewish communities in Deal and Brooklyn.
